By way of a photo unveiled on social media, Netflix has announced the commencement of filming - set to unfold between Rome and Naples - on a new Italian series, going by the working title of Sara and based on the novels written by Maurizio De Giovanni. The protagonists of the series, as seen in the photo taken on set, are Teresa Saponangelo (awarded the 2022 Best Supporting Actress David di Donatello trophy for Hand of God [+see also:

De Giovanni is one of the most beloved authors of detective stories in Italy. A number of his books have been turned into hit TV series, such as Inspector Ricciardi, I bastardi di Pizzofalcone and, in 2021, Mina Settembre. He has written no fewer than six novels on the imaginary character of Sara, as well as a short story, all published between 2018 and 2023.

Penned by Donatella Diamanti, Mario Cristiani and Giovanni Galassi, directed by Carmine Elia (Sopravvissuti) and produced by Palomar, this 6-episode series sees tired former domestic intelligence agent Sara, who’s retreated into a prison of solitude, returning to ask a favour of her long-time friend and colleague Teresa (Gerini) in the hope that the latter can help shed light on the premature death of Sara’s son. But as we all know, you don’t get something for nothing. In a flash, she finds herself tangled back up in her old life. Whether she likes it or not, Sara is still the best: she was known as the “invisible woman”, and her gift is eternally in demand. Thus, as she learns about the life of her son, which she knew almost nothing about, Sara sinks ever deeper into an investigation confronting her with the many ghosts of her past. Balancing these two factors proves an incredibly difficult task, as well as highly dangerous. Ironically, however, it allows this invisible woman to come back to life to do what she does best: delivering justice.
