Pan-European Pesaro

by

- 38th International Exhibition of New Cinema focuses on Spanish film, plus tributes to Directors, and an anthology of documentaries

Spanish is the official language of the38th International Exhibition of New Cinema of Pesaro starting June 21. Organised with CEFC (European Film Festival Co-ordination), this year´s edition will open up to include most of Europe, with the premieres of a some of the Continent´s most memorable documentaries of the past and present day.
One of the highlights is an opportunity to see the very best of contemporary Spanish cinema, especially that of the `90s, a decade during which over 140 Iberian directors made their debuts. Modern Spanish cinema is one of Europe´s most innovative schools, although it is still overshadowed by the end of the Franchist regime. The selection includes La buena vida (1996) by writer Fernando Trueba´s brother, David; Daniel Calparsoro´s Asfalto (1999) and Julio Medem´s Tierra (1999), first seen in competition at Cannes ´99.
Pesaro will also take a comprehensive look at the work of one of Switzerland´s most interesting directors, Daniel Schmid. A close friend of the late Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Schmid has clearly been influenced by the German director´s passion for opera and all things Baroque, as exemplified by two titles, The Kiss of Tosca and William Tell.
Pesaro also includes retrospectives of the work of French director Alain Fleischer and the American experimental filmmaker, Jay Rosenblatt.ì while Italy´s Ettore Scola will celebrate forty years in the film business as the subject of this year´s Special Event.
