- The French-German TV channel opts for the new features by Lars von Trier, Guédiguian, Dumont and Honoré. It is also investing in the Hungarian György Pàlfi and documentary maker, Christophe de Ponfilly

Lars von Trier, Robert Guédiguian, Bruno Dumont, Christophe Honoré: Arte France Cinéma has published the list of 7 feature films that the selection committee has agreed to co-produce for 2003 during its last meeting. The list is a collection of talent that confirms the important role played by the cinema section of the French-German cultural TV channel. Contrary to the other French television networks, it is putting more investment in co-productions than in the purchase of broadcasting rights.

. The second European filmmaker to be supported by the cultural TV channel is György Pàlfi, the Hungarian director who came to fame with Hukkle. He will be starting shooting on the family saga Taxidermia in Hungary in January 2004, being produced by Memento Films.
The 5 other films being supported by Arte production are French works. These include the film currently being worked on by Robert Guédiguian, Le dernier Mitterrand and Bruno Dumont’s Flandres, which is due to start filming in February.

The channel’s selection committee has also paid some attention to young directors, like Christophe Honoré who is already on the set of his Ma mère, starring Isabelle Huppert, Louis Garrel and Emma de Caunes (produced by Gémini Films); Anne Villacèque and her film Riviera with Josiane Balasko (produced by Agat Films) and the first feaure length film by the documentary maker Christophe de Ponfilly (Massoud l'Afghan): L'étoile du soldat, about the fortunes of a young Russian solder during the Afghan war (Production Albert Films).
In 2002 Arte co-produced 19 films, 16 of which were French initiatives, with a total investment of €6.57 million in cinema (€3.17 million of pre-purchases and €3.40 million in co-productions).
