FESTIVALS Switzerland

Shorts subjects at Winterthur

by

Beginning today and continuing until November 16th, Winterthur is hosting, for the seventh consecutive year, the International Days of Short Subjects . With it’s increasing success and with a growing number of faithful fans, this year’s festival presents a particularly interesting program. It’s evolution is also proven by the record number of applications to participate in this international competition: about 1200 films from 54 countries, from which the selection committee has chosen 35 from 18 different countries. With five films competing, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany are the countries most frequently represented.
The 2003 edition inaugurates the CHurzfilm section, which proposes a selection of nine films which will contend for the Prize for the best Swiss short subject. The many special programs also include the retrospective Filmarbeitskurse 1967-1969, which gives a sampling of short subjects made by students from cinema classes at the School of Art in Zurich, a retrospective dedicated to Canadian director Guy Maddin, and an homage to actor Klaus Kinski. The program also includes special showings for young people, as well as a section called Europe in Shorts, with eight European experimental shorts.
