New Cinema Law

The German Culture minister, Christine Weiss, has given an enthusiastic response to the parliamentary approval of an amendment to the law on film production (FFG), calling it a “milestone”. She stressed how “everyone is really proud of the way the negotiations were handled and the ensuing results”.

has shown German cinema’s great potential . Up until now national films have only managed capture a 11-19% audience share, much less than they deserve. The new law (which the minister Weiss defines as “marked by pragmatism”) will enable the study of a more specific marketing system, that is able to pave the way for German films on the international circuit. It will also make the national production structure more effective, increase funding for film promotion by 40%, rising from the current figure of €46 million to a budget of €64 million, and will pay closer attention to all the phases of film production, from initial subject idea to eventual theatrical distribution.
