Now in post-production, the film stars Itziar Ituño (known for her roles in the series Money Heist and Berlin), Susana Abaitua (who we recently saw in Valle de sombras and Los Farad), Luis Tosar (the winner of three Goyas has already appeared in the filmmaker’s previous two works and recently starred in We Treat Women Too Well [+see also:

series profile]), the debut of Charo García (selected after a casting process) and Guzmán himself.
Filmed over ten weeks in different locations in the Community of Madrid and Andalusia, it is a social drama with thriller overtones. Its synopsis presents 47-year-old Lucas (played by the director himself), and 86-year-old Antonia (Charo García), who share an apartment in the city centre. Despite their economic difficulties, they live with affection, hope and a sense of humour. Their life goes on as normal until urban gentrification forces them to leave their home, but one man's decision will change the rest of their lives.
In the words of Daniel Guzmán, “The Debt is about those who try to live day by day with dignity and hope, even though they have almost everything going against them. Characters whose lives challenge the meritocratic narrative that people are what they want to be, regardless of their circumstances and conditioning factors.” He goes on to say, “the film reflects, among other aspects, on affective needs and uprooting, on life and our relationship with death, on morality and guilt, but, above all, it analyses the importance in our childhood of the educational, social and economic factors that end up marking and moulding our personality.”
The Debt is a feature staged by El Niño Producciones, Aquí y Allí Films and La Mirada Oblicua. It includes the participation of RTVE, Movistar Plus+, Telemadrid and Canal Sur, in collaboration with the ICAA and Community of Madrid.
