Following the magical and enlightening experiences with Apichatpong Weerasethakul in the Peruvian Amazon jungle in 2022 (see the news) and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico in 2023 (see the news), the programme returns to the latter country. For the first time, 50 emerging filmmakers from around the world will have the opportunity to enhance their creativity, sharpen their vision and work on their short films under the guidance of Pedro Costa, one of the most authentic and influential voices in contemporary cinema. This time, the master will share tools, advice and experiences that have gradually allowed him to forge a brilliant and solidified methodology, creating breathtaking works with minimal resources.

The international call for entries closes on 10 July at 11:59 am PST. For more information and the application form, click here.

There will be 12 days of observation, shared meals, walks, and letting thoughts flow in horizontal dialogue, creating an environment where emerging talents from diverse nationalities and backgrounds can bring 50 short films to light. All of this, under the mentorship of Pedro Costa and using a fascinating methodology created by master Abbas Kiarostami, shaped by Werner Herzog, revisited by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and now adapted and reinforced by the Portuguese filmmaker.

The lab will take place from 23 September-3 October, in a carefully designed space created by the Playlab Films team. The base will be Shambalanté, a place that uses sacred geometry, ancient techniques and modern eco-technology to achieve harmony across times, becoming a sanctuary of relaxation and healing. Nestled in the heart of a sacred land, immersed in the Yucatecan jungle, where the Mayans left their powerful legacy, it is just an hour away from Mérida, the capital and most populous city of the Mexican state of Yucatán, located in the magical town of Izamal. From this location, participants will be able to explore Mayan paths through their legends, worldview, language, ceremonies and herbal medicine, feeling the living voice of their heritage.
