GoCritic! launches call for video journalism workshop at Animest Bucharest

GoCritic!, the training programme for emerging film journalists and critics, is entering the second round of its partnership with the Animation Festival Network (AFN), boasting a new element: a video journalism workshop that will hold its first edition at the Bucharest International Animated Film Festival Animest. The festival takes place from 5-14 October, and the workshop will unspool over a central part of this period, from 8-13 October. It is aimed at participants based in Bucharest or those who can find their own accommodation in the city.

Video journalism will also be part of other international GoCritic! workshops in partnership with AFN in the period 2024-2026, the details of which will be announced in a few weeks’ time, along with a brand-new format and curriculum focused on capacity building among young professionals in the field of film journalism and criticism.

“The vibrant form of video journalism is becoming increasingly prevalent in the media landscape, and we want to explore and refine the line between journalism, film criticism and video essays from other audiovisual formats dealing with cinema topics,” says GoCritic! head of studies Vladan Petković. “Our aim is to help talented people who are already exploring this mode of expression to transition to the professional realm, and improve the skills of those who are already doing it in established outlets.”

The Animest workshop will be conducted by Ana Stanić, head of the video department at Cineuropa. She is a filmmaker, video journalist and documentarian with a strong focus on both creative content and technical execution. She has worked in video journalism for over a decade, covering all major European film festivals. Her work spans various activities and organisations in the field of video content creation, including European Film Promotion’s Shooting Stars, Scandinavian Films, Doc Alliance and more, where she conducts interviews with emerging talents and showcases programme features.

As an educator at Cimdata in Berlin, she teaches video and TV production, further extending her influence in the media landscape. Additionally, she collaborates with Counterpoints Arts in London as a documentarian, capturing exhibitions and creating artist portraits.

The workshop is open to applicants over 18 years of age residing in Bucharest, or those who can find their own accommodation in the city. It will be conducted in English, and four participants will be selected. The application form, including the workshop description, is available here, and the deadline is set for 20 September.
