On the Simenon trail

by

As part of the programme for Walloon 2003, the Siménon year in Liegi, Grignoux will be presenting the film by Jean-Claude Riga and Léon Michaux, Simenon et les gens d’en face, produced by Nord Film in collaboration with WIP and Dune. The screening will be on November 27 at 20.00 in the Le Parc cinema in Liegi and it will be followed by a meeting with the directors.
While he was writing a report in Stalinist Ukraine in June 1933, the police forced the author Simenon to be accompanied everywhere by a young guide, Sonia, who he fought with and who was later to become the heroine of his book “Les gens d’en face”. More than 70 years later, the two directors set off the retrace the author’s footsteps, also accompanied by a guide, this time called Olga. The work is halfway between a documentary and a drama and Olga takes the filmmakers to look at the dossier on Simenon in the KGB archives, where the ghosts of the old oppressive regime come to life again.
