The programme of the 37th Karlovy Vary Film Festival (4-13 July) is starting to take form. Organised in one of Europe´s most celebrated spa towns, Karlovy Vary has a rich selection of films from Europe and beyond in competition, including Cédric Klapish´s L´auberge espagnole and Germany´s record-breaking Nowhere in Africa by Caroline Link - a film that swept the boards at the recent German Lola awards. Spain will present Julio Wallowits and Roger Gual´s Smoking Room while Ennio De Dominicis will be batting for Italy with L´italiano.
Karlovy Vary is also an opportunity to showcase eastern Europe with films from Romania, Hungary, Russia and, of course, host country, the Czech Republic that has two titles in competition. Petr Zelenka´s Rok Dàbla - The Year of the Devil, a biographical documentary about folk musician Jaromir Nohavica, will open Karlovy Vary, followed by Zdenek Tyc´s Smradi - Brats.
Special guests include Sir Sean Connery, scheduled to receive a Lifetime Achievement award, Stellan (Right or Wrong) Skarsgaard and Ireland´s Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, the star of Bend it like Beckham - both films will be screened out of competition.
