Since it was created back in 2000, the Cannes Film Festival Résidence has hosted more than 250 directors hailing from around 60 countries, offering a springboard to myriad filmmakers who have gone on to enjoy international success. Among them, we could mention Payal Kapadia (who developed All We Imagine as Light [+see also:

, winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes in May, at the Résidence in 2019), Lucrecia Martel, Kornél Mundruczó, Sebastián Lelio, Jonas Carpignano, Corneliu Porumboiu, Amat Escalante, Michel Franco, László Nemes, Lukas Dhont, Nadine Labaki, Nadav Lapid, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, Carla Simón, Karim Aïnouz, Rungano Nyoni and Chiang Wei Liang.

From 1 October 2024-15 February 2025, the 48th session of the Cannes Film Festival Résidence is hosting four female and two male directors – all of whom are names to keep a close eye on – in Paris. Three of them will be working on their second feature: French-Moroccan helmer Sofia Alaoui (Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2023 with Animalia [+see also:

in the Venice Critics’ Week in 2022) and India’s Diwa Shah (who triumphed in the San Sebastián New Directors competition in 2023 with Bahadur the Brave). They are joined by three young filmmakers preparing their feature debuts: Russia’s Anastasia Veber (Golden Bear for Best Short Film at Berlin in 2022 with Trap), Lithuania’s Eglé Razumaite (in the short-film competition at Cannes this year with Ootidé) and Berlin-based Australian director Rudolf Fitzgerald-Leonard (popular in the 2022 Directors’ Fortnight with the short film Beben, among other titles).

It’s worth noting that these six promising filmmakers will also be attending Cannes from 13-24 May 2025 on the occasion of the 78th edition of the festival.
