Best friends Ona and Saule work as chefs in a small canteen in Kaunas, called Tasty. Always going out of their way to please their customers, one day, Saule signs them up for a televised cooking contest by creating fake restaurant profiles, and they miraculously get in. The prize? The winner will receive their very own restaurant. Turning up to the show, the unlikely pair are the clear underdogs, struggling to compete with their idol, chef Madame Brukne – and they are not sure how to handle even the simplest requests like cooking “operatives” (aka aperitifs). Despite this, their simple but pitch-perfect dishes get them noticed and stand out from the crowd, and they successfully get through the first rounds supported by adoring fans – that is, until Ona falls for charismatic French judge Emanuel.

, which world-premiered simultaneously at the Tallinn Black Nights, Cottbus and Cork film festivals on 9 November.

The cast is led by Agnieszka Ravdo, Elena Ozarinskaitė, Lina Rastokaitė, Leonardas Pobedonoscevas, Vytautas Rumšas, Natalija Janičkina and Liubomiras Laucevičius.

“In Tasty, the most important question driving me is how value is created. I want to ask how much of us is truly ourselves, and how much is made up of the lies we create about ourselves. Can raw simplicity, without fancy packaging, get noticed in today’s world? Is value created only through image? I believe the modern culinary media world is the perfect place to explore this,” the helmer explains.

Tasty was produced by Lukas Trimonis for Vilnius-based InScript and co-produced by Estonia’s Nafta. The project received backing from the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Lithuanian tax incentive, pubcaster LRT and Acme Films. Film Republic is in charge of its world sales.
