The Quirino Awards announce the finalists for their eighth edition

A total of 26 animated works from ten Ibero-American countries have been selected as finalists for the eighth edition of the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation. The winners will be revealed on 10 May during a ceremony in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. Spain leads the nominations with 12 works, followed by Brazil with eight and Portugal with five. Other finalist countries include Chile (three nominations), Argentina and Mexico (two each), and Cuba, Panama, Peru and Uruguay, each represented by a single work.
This year’s finalists were selected from among 263 submissions, competing in seven main categories - Feature Film, Series, Short Film, School Short Film, Commissioned Work, Video Game Animation, and Music Video - as well as three technical categories: Visual Development, Animation Design, and Sound Design and Original Music.
The jury for this edition includes US producer Ben Kalina (Titmouse Studio), Spanish researcher and programmer Carolina López Caballero, Helena Nylander (head of children’s content acquisitions at Swedish public broadcaster SVT), Brazilian director and animator Daniel Bruson, and Leyla Formoso, CEO of Prime Entertainment Group.

The nominees in the Best Series category are Jasmine & Jambo (season 3) (Spain), a musical preschool series produced by Teidees Audiovisuals and directed by Sílvia Cortés, vying for its third consecutive win; Jorel’s Brother (season 5) (Brazil), a Copa Studio production, previously awarded Best Series in 2019; Firsts (season 1) (Chile), directed by Bambú Orellana and Paloma Mora, co-produced with Spain’s TV ON Producciones and Admirable Films; and Wow Lisa (season 1) (Chile), directed by Antonia Herrera and María Elisa Soto-Aguilar, produced by Punkrobot.
The nominees in the Best Short Film category are The Girl with the Occupied Eyes (Portugal), directed by André Carrilho and selected at over 75 festivals worldwide; Percebes (Portugal), a BAP Animation Studios production, winner of the 2024 Cristal Award at Annecy; and Capybaras, directed by Alfredo Soderguit, a co-production between Uruguay, France and Chile.
The remaining categories, including Animation School Short Film, Animation Music Video, Commissioned Film, Animation for Video Games and the three technical awards, also feature a strong mix of established and emerging talents across Ibero-America. The full list of nominees is available here.
