Jonas Geirnaert’s How to Kill Your Sister set to world-premiere in the Canneseries competition
- The darkly comedic exploration of family, secrets and reconciliation follows two sisters on a road trip that forces them to confront their painful history

The Belgian-German comedy-drama series How to Kill Your Sister will have its world premiere in competition at Canneseries, this year running from 24-29 April. The six-episode show blends dark humour and emotional depth to explore the complex relationship between two estranged sisters on a final road trip.
How to Kill Your Sister follows the story of Anna, who, after eight years of silence, turns up on the doorstep of her older sister Kat with a coffin mounted on the roof of her car. Anna has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and invites Kat to join her on one last journey to Santa Rita, the place in Spain where they spent their childhood summers with their family. Along the way, Anna aims to confront their painful past and uncover the reasons behind Kat's abandonment after their parents' death. The two estranged sisters set off on a darkly comedic road trip, doomed to derail. The closer they get to their destination, the harder it becomes for the sisters to hide the secrets they both harbour. The two siblings are portrayed by Emma Rotsaert as Anna and Marjan De Schutter as Kat, while the cast also includes Nico Sturm, Sofie Decleir, Peter Gorissen, Els Olaerts and Lukas Bulteel.
The six-part series was created by Pedro Elias and Evelien Broekaert, who commented: “How to Kill Your Sister hovers somewhere between a nostalgic longing for a colourful past and the fragile hope for a more carefree future – an ode to the clumsiness with which we stumble through life.” Jonas Geirnaert directs the series and added: “This is an unfiltered exploration of how families survive, how secrets tear us apart, and how sometimes the most brutal honesty comes wrapped in dark humour.” The production features Bert Jacobs as the editor, Esmoreit Lutters as the director of photography and Jimmy Van Meel handling the art direction. The series’ score is composed by Meskerem Mees and Pieter Van Dessel.
How to Kill Your Sister is a co-production between Hilde De Laere for Belgium's FBO Production, and Gunnar Juncken and Nanni Erben for Germany’s MadeFor Film GmbH, with the support of Play4, Streamz and ZDFneo as key broadcasters. The series is being produced with the support of the VAF (Flanders Audiovisual Fund) and Screen Flanders. It is set to premiere in autumn 2025 on Play4 and Streamz in Belgium, with international distribution handled by the production companies.
