From Dust crowned as the best work in Cannes’ Immersive Competition
- CANNES 2025: Composed and directed by the Netherlands’ Michel van der Aa, this 24-minute voyage unfolds within a unique VR opera

Chaired by Luc Jacquet (who was flanked by Laurie Anderson, Tania de Montaigne, Martha Fiennes and Tetsuya Mizuguchi), the jury for the Immersive Competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival (see the news on the selection) has decided to reward the Dutch production From Dust by Michel van der Aa.
Produced by doubleA Foundation, the work whisks us away into a unique virtual-reality opera, where electronic soundscapes merge with the mesmerising voices of vocal ensemble Sjaella. Through cutting-edge AI technology, each performance is uniquely tailored to its visitor. From Dust transcends the boundaries of traditional opera and takes you to the forefront of immersive storytelling and personalised art.
