European Guide to Shorts

by

This weekend in Prague, the French Short Film Agency has presented the first guide to European Short Film Agencies during the annual conference of operators in the Europa Cinemas chain. The guide is published in English and French and it outlines the current marketplace for short films in Europe, with listings given country by country, showing the institutions working in the field of short films.

It’s the first inititaive of its kind, conceived for cinemas to use to improve the circulation of short films in Europe. It provides an extensive overview of the diversity of distribution of short films in Europe, and shows there are structures specialising in the format in Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and Switzerland, and private companies widely supported by the State in Belgium, Italy and Spain, with no specific structure in the Scandanavian countries.

The French Short Film Agency celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and is an association supported by the French National Film Centre - CNC. It is led by Philippe Germani and it offers cinema operators access to copies of more than 10,000 films as well as providing technical and artistic advice. In 1989, the Agency created an alternative chain of theatres in France for the spread of French and European short films and it has also entered into partnership with the Europa Cinemas chain.
