Cinema admissions in the UK in October were up 29% on the same period last year, reaching a total of 17.3m tickets, an average of 4m tickets sold per week.
The most successful film of the month was Disney’s Finding Nemo (£28.7m), but the Yorkshire-based Calendar Girls also performed very well, taking an extra £7.9m in October, gaining third place in the month’s top ten listings. The British comedy took a total £18.4m until the end of October, making it 9th position in the 2003 Top Ten Films at the box office.
The US/German/Czech film The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, starring Sean Connery grossed over £5.3m, reaching 5th place in October’s Top 10.
“October was a terrific month for cinema”, said Christine Vostello, vice president of the Cinema Advertising Association, which gathers the box office figures in the UK. “The best is yet to come: Love Actually [+see also:

And indeed, Love Actually has taken over £15m after only ten days, so Richard Curtis’ feel-good movie has a very good chance to even beat The Matrix Reloaded, currently Number One at the 2003 UK Box Office, with £32.9m.
