M Content, the Spanish production company founded by Amaya Muruzábal – the creative mind behind Amazon MGM Studios’ hit series Red Queen – has partnered with leading Irish outfit Vico Films to develop the historical epic series The Patricios. The announcement was first reported by Variety this week.

Created and written by Muruzábal herself, The Patricios is inspired by true events that took place during the US-Mexico War of 1846. The series follows the Saint Patrick’s Battalion, a group of Irish immigrants originally enlisted in the Texas Rangers who deserted the US Army to fight alongside Mexican forces. Their dramatic journey culminates in a final stand at San Ángel, where they were captured and sentenced to death. Director Julián de Tavira (Like Water for Chocolate, Red Queen, Hernán) is attached to helm the project.

Muruzábal describes the show as “not just a story from the past, but a deeply relevant exploration of identity, justice, migration and cultural blending that continues to define the USA today.”

While primarily spoken in English, The Patricios weaves Spanish naturally into its narrative. Muruzábal envisions it as a landmark international series targeting audiences in Europe, the USA and Mexico. The project benefits from the consultancy of Italian author Pino Cacucci, known for his novel St. Patrick’s Battalion.

Vico Films, with over two decades of experience, is among Ireland’s most dynamic production firms. Recently, it released the fourth season of the BBC comedy The Young Offenders [+see also:

and the psychological thriller Dead & Buried (Virgin Media TV & BBC NI), both receiving international distribution through All3Media.

Cormac Fox, partner at Vico Films, highlights the show’s timely resonance: “The Patricios tells the extraordinary story of Irish soldiers who chose conscience over allegiance, uniting with those they were sent to fight because they believed in justice – a powerful reminder of standing up for what is right in a divided world.”

Founded in 2024 and operating from Madrid, Buenos Aires and Mexico City, M Content focuses on bold, energetic stories with a touch of “Latin coolness” aimed at the global market.

Muruzábal, alongside writer José Fajardo, presented The Patricios at the ninth edition of Conecta Fiction & Entertainment’s Pitch Co-Pro Series in Cuenca, Spain (16-19 June), seeking strategic partners and distributors, particularly in the USA, Mexico and Germany, in order to realise the project’s transnational ambitions.
