Spain’s Celeste wins Best International Comedy at the Italian Global Series Festival

The award winners of the inaugural Italian Global Series Festival were announced on Saturday in Riccione. Top honours went to the psychological thriller Doubt by Song Yeon Hwa, which won Best Series – International Competition, Drama. Celeste [+see also:

, created by Spaniard Diego San José and directed by Elena Trapé, won Best Series – International Competition, Comedy, while the war drama The Train, directed by Vladimir Yanoshchuk, was awarded Best Series – International Competition, Limited Series.

The Drama Competition category – led by the jury chair, director-screenwriter Cristina Comencini, and also comprising actors Francesco Centorame, Debi Mazar, Clive Standen, Margherita Mazzucco and actor-writer-producer Frank Spotnitz – awarded Best Director to Lisa Mulcahy for The Assassin, Best Actress to Phyllis Logan for The Puzzle Lady and Best Actor to Han Suk-kyu for Doubt. The Drama Special Jury Award was given to Chile’s Hidden Island by Pablo Díaz del Río.

The Comedy Competition jury – headed up by the president, director-screenwriter Paolo Genovese, along with composer Andrea Guerra, journalist Constance Jamet, directors and producers Antonio and Marco Manetti, and actors Gorka Otxoa and Iris Peynado – handed Best Director to Christopher Smith for Video Nasty, Best Actress to Carmen Machi for Celeste and Best Actor to Ahmet Kural for Gassal, while the Comedy Special Jury Award was given to Douglas Is Cancelled, created by Steven Moffat.

As for the Limited Series Competition, the jury – led by director-screenwriter Bille August, flanked by screenwriters Barbara Abel and Deborah Davis, producer Alan Gasmer and actor Riccardo Scamarcio – handed Best Director to Lucy Gaffy for Mix Tape, while Best Actress went to Laure Calamy for The Confidante. Best Actor was bestowed upon Matthew Gurney for Reunion, and the Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast was granted to Kabul [+see also:

Best Director - Drama went to Laura Bispuri for L’Amica Geniale - Season 4, the equivalent gong for comedy went to Alice Filippi, Francesco Capaldo and Sydney Sibilia for Hanno Ucciso l'Uomo Ragno – La Leggendaria Storia Degli 883, Best Director - MiniSeries was bestowed upon Nicolangelo Gelormini and Valeria Golino for L’arte della Gioia, and Best Director of a TV Movie was deemed to be Cristina Comencini for Il Treno dei Bambini.
