Edith, a journalist and single mother by choice, begins to struggle with the emotional toll of raising her five-year-old son alone. When she uncovers the identity of the anonymous sperm donor – Niels, a successful game developer living nearby – she sets up a meeting under the guise of a professional interview. As their connection deepens, Edith finds herself entangled in deception, risking the stability of the life she’s created.

This is the premise of Norwegian actress and director Janicke Askevold’s sophomore feature (following 2021’s Together Alone), Solomamma [+see also:

, which is playing in the international competition of this year’s Locarno Film Festival (6-14 August – see the news). The cast is led by Lisa Loven Kongsli and Herbert Nordrum.

Solomamma is staged by Norway’s Bacon Pictures Oslo and Denmark’s Bacon Pictures Copenhagen, in co-production with Latvia’s Mistrus Media, Lithuania’s Dansu and Finland’s It’s Alive Films. Attached backers include the Norwegian Film Institute, the Lithuanian Film Centre, the National Film Centre of Latvia, YLE and Post Control Helsinki.

Playtime is in charge of its international rights. The pic has already been sold to key territories including Switzerland (Frenetic), Italy (Teodora), Benelux (Imagine), Israel (​New Cinema), Hungary (Budapest Film Festival) and Scandinavia (Scanbox).
