Rome will once again become the beating heart of the international audiovisual industry as the MIA - Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo prepares to host its 11th edition from 6-10 October. Following the record-breaking 2024 edition, which welcomed more than 2,800 accredited professionals, the gathering will return to its traditional venues, Palazzo Barberini and Cinema Barberini.

Promoted by ANICA (chaired by Alessandro Usai) and APA (chaired by Chiara Sbarigia), and directed for the fourth year by Gaia Tridente, MIA reaffirms its status as Italy’s most important industry event and one of the few international markets covering all audiovisual genres.

This year introduces a refreshed visual identity and the “All Stories Lead to MIA” campaign, a contemporary reimagining of Rome as the global crossroads for storytelling. Nearly 500 projects from 81 countries applied for the Co-Production Market, with 62 titles across the Animation, Documentary, Drama and Film strands selected to be pitched in front of buyers, financiers and decision makers.

MIA 2025 brings several new initiatives. Among them is the Book Adaptation Forum (BAF), supported by the Fondazione Roma Lazio Film Commission, which will foster synergies between the publishing and screen sectors. Meanwhile, Apollo Series, a training initiative in collaboration with the Series Mania Institute and the Göteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision, aims to strengthen European scripted talent.

Other additions include UNBOX | Short Film Days, created with Alice nella Città to spotlight emerging short-form talent; vertical AI workshops, curated by Largo.ai with the support of Creative Europe – MEDIA; and the Industry Insider Bootcamp, a professional training programme presented by United Talent Agency.

Alongside these novelties, the market will also continue with long-established initiatives such as C EU Soon, supporting theatrical distribution, and innovation-driven showcases like MIA XR.

However, the Co-Production Market remains the core of MIA’s programme. This year’s selection features 16 animation projects, 15 documentaries, 15 drama series and 16 fiction features. Each strand was curated by international selection committees comprising leading producers, commissioners and executives from major broadcasters, studios and sales outfits.

The Animation line-up highlights both newcomers and established auteurs. French filmmaker Éléa Gobbe-Mévellec presents The Northern Star, while Spain’s Nacho La Casa returns with Like!. Italy is represented by The Treasure of the Wyrm, Profumina, and Roc and Lola. The Drama Forum includes Rage, directed by Xavier Dolan and produced by France’s Madelon Production, alongside ambitious projects from Northern Europe, the UK, Ireland and beyond.

In Documentary, Italy accounts for six out of the 15 selected titles. Among the highlights are Baseball Island (Netherlands), The Maserati Chronicles (Italy) and Hijacked Life (Lithuania/Estonia). Fiction features in development include Gentian Koçi’s Albanian drama Cold Sun, Birutė Kapustinskaitė’s Beginners (Lithuania) and Razan Madhoon’s Palestinian project The Good Spirit. The “Wanna Taste IT?” section continues to promote new Italian talent, with four local titles pitching to international partners.

Founded in 2015 as a joint venture between ANICA and APA, MIA has grown into a strategic hub for professionals working across theatrical, television and digital formats. The event is supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, ITA – Italian Trade Agency, the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Lazio Region. Official sponsors include the Fondazione Roma Lazio Film Commission and UniCredit, while Eurimages has granted the event its patronage for the 2025 edition.

Unlike many other industry markets, MIA is not tied to a film festival, which allows it to focus exclusively on business-to-business activities. Its curated approach offers a unique opportunity for professionals to discover diverse narratives and co-production models, while exploring the impact of emerging technologies and innovation on audiovisual creation.

With its new identity and expanded programming, the 2025 edition confirms MIA’s ambition to act as both a showcase for Italian creativity and a global platform for international collaboration.
