SF Studios and REinvent International Sales have announced Doctor Glas, a modern adaptation of Hjalmar Söderberg’s classic novel. The new psychological thriller stars Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Isac Calmroth and Christian Fandango.

Erik Leijonborg is attached to direct. Some of his most recent credits include the TV series King & Conqueror (2025), Evil (2023), Hamilton (2020-2022) and The Last Kingdom (2018).

The story of his latest endeavour follows Gabriel Glas (played by Calmroth), a lonely young doctor who despises the superficial ideals of his time yet secretly longs to belong. When Helga Gregorius (Loch Næss), a celebrated and enigmatic fashion designer, steps into Glas’s practice, his world is thrown off balance. Behind her flawless façade, she is trapped in a marriage with acclaimed author Patrik Gregorius (Fandango).

Gabriel sees it as his mission to save Helga from Patrik’s clutches. But as the two become entangled in lies, desire and power games, Gabriel crosses increasingly dangerous moral boundaries. In this shifting web, one question dominates: who is truly the monster – Patrik, Helga or Gabriel himself?

“We have wanted to explore characters that cannot be placed into simple boxes. The work has been both crazy and exhausting, but that is exactly why the result feels so alive. Doctor Glas is a film that both entertains and raises questions,” said Calmroth and Fandango.

“For me, this film is a dream come true. To work with people you feel safe with and truly like, while at the same time giving new life to such a beloved story, is a gift,” added Loch Næss.

“With this, my dream project is coming to life. This is a story that really captures what it means to be human today. A film about surface and success, but also about the cracks beneath. It is a psychological thriller, but rooted in a realistic, contemporary and raw drama,” commented Leijonborg, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Calmroth.

Production is led by Patrick Ryborn, of Unlimited Stories, alongside Fandango and Calmroth for Triangledrama, in collaboration with Leijonborg. Ryborn, one of Sweden’s most experienced producers, has credits including Hammarskjöld [+see also:

“After all of the films I have produced, it is an adventure to take on Doctor Glas – one of Sweden’s greatest novels. With Leijonborg as director and these talented actors, we will create a new classic from an iconic book, a film that will draw people of all ages into the cinemas,” Ryborn stated.

SF Studios will distribute the feature in the Nordics, while REinvent handles international sales. The co-producers are SF Studios, SVT and Leijonborg Film & TV, with support from the Swedish Film Institute through film commissioner Andrea Östlund.

The Swedish theatrical premiere is slated for 6 March 2026.
