On Monday 15 September, as part of the industry activities at the third edition of the South International Series Festival (12-17 September) in Cádiz, the South Boost section unspooled, in which five Spanish (or, to be more precise, Andalusian) titles in development were presented, which we give an overview of below.

La última paloma
Showrunner: Luis Lloret
Production: Guion Alto, Capitán Araña
Following a thriller format, the series will tell of how Patria Santiago, a Civil Guard officer from the Cádiz-area town of Rota, embarks on a harrowing race against time to apprehend a ruthless serial killer. The case will involve senior officials from the US Navy Base, and its origins can be traced back to the 1950s, when the arrival of the Sixth Fleet turned the town into a vice den.

film profile]) to play the character of Lana, a mother afflicted by different problems after having given birth. She decides to attend a postnatal support group where, after a few sessions, she forges friendships and finds out that her problems are not problems, but rather the reality of motherhood.

Correos y telégrafos

In this mockumentary with flourishes of (rural) comedy, made up of eight episodes each lasting 45 minutes, the parcels are piling up and chaos is taking hold in the Calzadilla de Abajo post office, tucked away in a corner of depopulated Andalusia. Vicente, its peculiar manager, is trying to save the service with the help of a dysfunctional team: a karaoke-obsessed postman, a civil servant who knows everything there is to know about the postal service, a hippie lorry driver and a rookie urbanite whose only desire is to run away. When they announce closure within seven months, a crazy countdown begins to avoid it.

Justa y Rufina

This miniseries is made up of two stories of parallel, but connected, friendships. In summer 2019, Justi and Rufi, two youngsters with very different lifestyles, meet – an event that has its origins in the story of Las Niñas de la Reja (lit. “The Girls of the Railings”): in 1935, Rufi’s great-grandmother and her friend La Chata had to fake the latter’s death in order to stop her from being killed by her husband. Over the course of the five episodes, the past will seep into the lives of Justi and Rufi, having a bearing on their decisions, thus showing how fears and disorders can be passed down from generation to generation, and how silence can make people ill.

El cantante

Based on Cosas que siempre quise contarte (lit. “Things I Always Wanted to Tell You”), the memoirs of Miguel Ríos, the series takes us on a journey through the artist’s life and, at the same time, is a an in-depth examination of a country, Spain, and of an era: that of the transition from the dictatorship to democracy, through music. It’s a story that begins in Granada in the late 1950s when, while Ríos is working in the vinyl section of a department store, the first record by Elvis Presley comes into his possession. It culminates in 1982, in the midst of democracy, as a concert is held: Rock & Ríos, which would go on to be the best-selling Spanish-language rock record of all time.
