The European Film Awards announce shortlisted films

Taking place on 17 January 2026 in Berlin, Germany, the 38th European Film Awards honour the greatest achievements in European cinema. Presented annually by the European Film Academy, the awards have shortlisted 67 feature films for a possible nomination. The shortlist includes 44 fiction films, 15 documentaries and eight animated films, with 27 shortlisted movies directed or co-directed by women, and with 34 European – both EU and non-EU – countries represented.

The shortlisted fiction and documentary films have been chosen by members of the European Film Academy board and invited European experts, and the shortlisted animated features by a selection committee composed of members of the Academy board and invited experts in co-operation with CARTOON - European Association of Animation Film.

In the coming weeks, the 5,400 members of the European Film Academy will watch the shortlisted titles, except for the categories of European Young Audience Award, LUX Audience Award (see the news) and the Honorary Awards, and vote for the nominees for the categories of European Film, European Director, European Discovery—Prix Fipresci, European Documentary, European Animated Feature Film, European Actress, European Actor and European Screenwriter, which will be announced on 18 November, right after the 22nd Seville European Film Festival, reviving the tradition of announcing the majority of the nominations in front of an audience at an event that will now return to Seville every two years.

Further nomination announcements are the European Short Film – Prix Vimeo, chosen by the European Film Academy Short Film Network, on 31 October at the 70th Seminci – Valladolid International Film Festival; and the nominations for the categories of European Casting Director, European Cinematographer, European Composer (Original Score), European Costume Designer, European Editor, European Make-Up & Hair Artist, European Production Designer, and European Sound Designer on 26 November.
