The shoot for Daniel Auteuil's When the Night Falls enters the home stretch

Having kicked off on 27 October in the Rhône, the shoot for When the Night Falls by Daniel Auteuil is continuing in the Sarthe department, where it will wrap on 6 December. It marks the actor’s sixth feature as a director, after such movies as An Ordinary Case (unveiled as a Special Screening in the Official Selection at Cannes in 2024).
Leading the cast are Antoine Reinartz (2018 César Award for Best Supporting Actor for BPM (Beats Per Minute) and nominated in 2024 for Anatomy of a Fall, recently on fine form in Love Me Tender and the series Des vivants), Grégory Gadebois (2012 César Award for Most Promising Actor and nominated in 2014 as Best Actor for One of a Kind as well as in 2020 in the Best Supporting Actor category; popular of late, among others, in Orphan and Jean Valjean, and reuniting with the director after An Ordinary Case) and Daniel Auteuil himself (Best Actor Award at Cannes in 1996 for The Eighth Day, César Award for Best Actor in 1987 and 2000, and nominated a further 12 times; seen this year in A Private Life).
Written by Auteuil and Camille Lugan (The Book of Joy), the screenplay takes us back to August 1942. Amid the occupation, the Vichy government organises a mass round-up of foreign Jews. Gilbert Lesage, a young civil servant at the Service Social des Étrangers, is tasked with setting up a screening commission to rule on the fate of the arrested Jews, while Father Alexandre Glasberg, a committed humanitarian, manœuvres to save them. Caught between Vichy’s bureaucracy and mutual-support networks, they will have to join forces to defy the machinery of the State and risk the unthinkable to wrench lives from the grim fate that awaits them.
When the Night Falls is being produced by Frédéric Jouve for Les Films Velvet and by Zack Films (Daniel Auteuil’s company), and is being co-produced by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinéma. The cinematography is by Belgium's Jean-François Hensgens (nominated at the 2019 Magritte Awards in his field for Above the Law, and who previously teamed up with the director on An Ordinary Case). The full line-up of the film’s partners will be unveiled at a later date.
