FUNDING Spain

Aznar helps cinema

by

Over the last few days, the Spanish prime minister, José Maria Aznar, has announced additional funding for production, through the Film Protection Fund: there will be a further €27.8m added to the €33.6m given annually to the fund. Out of the €33.6m, €5m are to be given to the films released in cinemas before the new Cinema Law came into force. This decree regulates television’s investments in national cinema, while the remaining €28.6m will be used to support productions included in the new regulations. According to statements made by Aznar himself, the new funds will help producers who are still in debt, and will be available from the end of 2003.

This important increase in funding is added to the money made available to the fund, which has risen over the last few years from €18m in 1996 to €33.6m in 2004, giving the scheme a crucial role in the creation of a national film industry.
