With a screenplay by María Ballesteros and José Antonio de Pascual, the film explores — in the words of its creators — the reasons that lead us to believe in what we cannot see. The story beings when, in the middle of the night, a pig farmer returns home covered in blood, claiming to have seen a tiger. Is he telling the truth, or is this an elaborate excuse to hide the fact that he was stealing pigs?

Caza mayor is an adaptation of El tigre, winner of the Ondas Award for Best Fiction Podcast in 2025, written by the same screenwriters. According to the director, "it is a drama, a black comedy, a rural thriller and a western, something I've always wanted to shoot. It's difficult for me to find references. And I suppose that inability to categorise it is what attracted me most to the idea and what I pursue most. I believe it is something very unique to us and that defines us as a society and as human beings. One of the things that captivated me most about the podcast was the choice of cast members from Fregenal de la Sierra, which gave it authenticity and realism.”

He continues: “That's why I decided to do the same thing in the film and surround Antonio de la Torre with non-professional actors — people from the town — to maintain the realistic tone. So, we held a casting call full of real gems and then, with our protagonists, immersed ourselves completely in that peculiar and unique Extremadura accent, which is also very underused in our cinema and which, for me, is undoubtedly another of the great attractions of the project," he concludes.

Producers Félix Tusell (from Estela Films), Carmela Martínez Oliart (from Tenampa Films), Rafa Taboada (from Cut One) and actor Arturo Valls (for Pólvora Films) add: “this is a unique film, with touches of dark humour, whose script balances pure genre and naturalistic customs. From this foundation, Sánchez Arévalo directs De la Torre in the creation of a memorable protagonist who will force the viewer to decide whether he is a lying coward or a martyr capable of defending the truth to the bitter end.”

Caza mayor is produced by Movistar Plus+, La película del Tigre A.I.E., Estela Films, Tenampa Films, Cut One (Boomerang TV), Pólvora Films, and Tinnitus (Sánchez Arévalo's own company), with the participation of Atresmedia and the collaboration of Atresmedia Cine, plus funding from the ICAA and support from the Regional Government of Extremadura and the Community of Madrid. The film will be released in Spanish cinemas through Warner Bros. Pictures Spain, while its international sales are handled by Film Factory Entertainment.
