The English-language feature film No Man's Land will begin filming in Spain in April this year. It is directed by Vasilia Kuzmina from a screenplay co-written with Daisy Anderson. One of the film's main actors is Millicent Simmonds, known for her roles in Wonderstruck, A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II.

According to its creators, the film blends the unsettling world of The Handmaid's Tale with the ritualistic tension of Midsommar. Set in the near future, it follows Magda, the enigmatic and resilient matriarch and leader of an all-female community that she founded after a devastating civil war. When her son returns from the front to this world without men, his arrival triggers growing unease among the group. As hostility intensifies and unimaginable violence erupts, he begins to fear that the truth about what they have built – and what they have done to protect it – could cost him his life.

The film is inspired by real events that took place in Hungary between the 1910s and 1920s, when a close-knit group of women in a small village, led by a charismatic figure known as Aunt Suzy, began murdering their abusive husbands to regain control of their lives. They were known as the “Angel Makers of Nagyrév” and the group is believed to have killed between 50 and several hundred men.

Frank Ariza, producer of the film through his company AF Films, says that "producing No Man's Land is one of the most ambitious and rewarding experiences of my career. At AF, we have built a legacy of stories that challenge audiences and showcase the depth of European cinema, and this film is no exception. Filming in Spain allows us to bring authenticity and atmosphere to Vasilisa's powerful vision, combining striking visual artistry with deep emotional truth. It is a project that breaks boundaries, brings together extraordinary talents and reflects exactly the kind of bold, world-class cinema we are proud to champion.”

Vasilisa Kuzmina, a filmmaker, actress, and screenwriter of Russian-Iranian descent, made her directorial debut with the short film Alisa and the series of the same name, which premiered at the 2020 SXSW Festival in the Pilot Competition category. Her first feature film, Nika, produced in Russia and centred on the country’s forgotten young poet Nika Turbina, premiered at SXSW 2022 in the Narrative Feature Film Competition. No Man’s Land is her second feature as a director.

The film is produced by Frank Ariza for AF Films and Juliana Lubin, in association with Boom Films. Goodfellas will handle international sales.
