film profile], the new documentary by Polish filmmaker Maciej Cuske, set to world-premiere in the International Competition of this year’s Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival (5-15 March).
The feature follows a father who, while on holiday with his son and two of the boy’s friends, begins shooting an amateur horror film with them. Over the years, what starts off as a playful summertime activity evolves into a decade-long creative ritual, as the group continues to expand their handmade thriller project together.
Blending documentary observation with a coming-of-age spirit, the movie captures the passage of time, friendship and imagination, as its young protagonists grow older while holding onto the playful energy of childhood.
Candidates of Death was produced by Poland’s Bydgoszcz Film Chronicle Foundation.
