30 European projects at CineMart
- Producers and directors showcase their future films. The Rotterdam Festival is the venue for 30 authors from France, Holland, Belgium and Italy, searching for funding to complete their projects
The Rotterdam International Film Festival (January 21 to February 1, 2004) has chosen 47 productions, 30 of which are from Europe, out of the 600 entries sent in for the 21st edition of CineMart, a crucial appointment for directors and producers who are looking for funding.
There's a strong showing from France with Les amants réguliers by Philippe Garrel (Maïa Films), Les zones turquoises by Jean-Christophe Klotz (Les Films du Poisson), La trahison by Philippe Faucon (Kinok Films) and Une vieille maîtresse by Catherine Breillat (Flach Film), as well as some co-productions, including the collaboration with Morocco for WWW by Faouzi Bensaidi (Gloria Films) and with Hungary for Taxidermia by Gyorgy Palfi (Memento Films).
Belgium is presenting 4 projects, including My Queen Caro by Dorothée van den Berghe (Lumière and K2 Productions) and Snow White the Sequel by Picha (YC Aligator and DeFamilieJanssen), which marks the entry of animation to the CineMart.
There are three productions representing the Netherlands: De Vliegenierster van Kazbek by Ineke Smits (Van Huystee Film & TV), Het Zwijgen by André van der Hout & Adri Schrover (Waterland Films) and Push by Allard van der Werff (The Kasander Film Company). For Germany, there's Madonnen by Maria Speth (Pandora Filmproduktion) as well as two co-productions: The Executioner in Love by Jasmin Dizdar (Osiris Produktion) with Britain and Women without men by Shirin Neshat (Essential Filmproduktion) with France.
Italy will be represented by Città Invisibili, the collective work by Goran Paskaljevic, Otar Iosseliani and Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Rea Film) and Sonetàula by Savatore Mereu (Gianluca Arcopinto). The Nordic countries will also be present with: Factotum by Bent Hamer (Bulbul Films/Starksales Inc, Norway) and The Good Heart by Dagur Kari (Zik Zak Filmworks, Iceland). The other projects chosen to be shown at CineMart include Better Things by Duane Hopkins (Third Films Ltd, Britain), The Porcupine di Srdjan Dragojevic (Bluelight, Britain/Serbia) and Weltmeister by Florian Flicker (Coop99, Austria).
Ido Abram, the director of CineMart, says this year's edition is particularly interesting “considering the quality of the projects put forward by already famous directors, as well as works offered by upcoming talents. The 2004 programme is a perfect representation of the spirit and the profile of the Festival, as well as highlighting the work done by the Hubert Bals Fund”.
