The two British films face competition from Big Fish by Tim Burton, Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola and Finding Nemo. Cold Mountain has also been nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (for London's Jude Law) and Best Actress (Nicole Kidman).

Anthony Minghella had this to say about his film's 8 nominations: " I'm delighted that Cold Mountain has been so generously recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press. I hope their enthusiasm encourages audiences to come and see the movie for themselves. It's been a long journey making this film, for me and for a wonderful cast and crew, and this is a tremendous Christmas present”.
