The Balkan Documentary Center (BDC) has launched the call for applications for the 2026 edition of BDC Discoveries, its flagship development programme for documentary filmmakers. The initiative, which forms part of the wider Balkan Doc Market industry platform, is aimed at projects in development with international potential, and is open to filmmakers from across Europe and neighbouring regions working on Balkan-related stories.

The 2026 edition introduces a dual-track structure that combines the programme’s long-standing focus on creative documentary filmmaking with an increased emphasis on journalistic and investigative storytelling. A total of eight projects will be selected, split evenly between four creative documentaries and four investigative documentary projects.

BDC Discoveries is designed for filmmakers from the Balkans and beyond who are seeking to develop their projects through mentorship, industry networking and international collaboration. Participants will take part in a two-module programme beginning with an online workshop in July 2026, followed by an in-person session during the Balkan Doc Market, set to take place in Sofia from 30 September-4 October.

The workshop will be conducted entirely in English, and will provide participants with opportunities to refine their projects, strengthen their pitching strategies and connect with documentary professionals from across the region and the wider international industry. The selected projects will also be presented during the Balkan Doc Market, which brings together filmmakers, producers, decision makers and potential partners for co-production meetings and professional exchange.

Eligible applicants include filmmakers from EU member states, the UK, the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The participation fee is set at €500.

Founded in 2011, the Balkan Documentary Center has established itself as one of the leading organisations supporting documentary filmmaking in Southeast Europe. Through initiatives such as Docu Rough Cut Boutique, organised in partnership with the Sarajevo Film Festival, BDC Discoveries and Balkan Watchers, the organisation provides support for documentary projects at different stages of development and production. BDC is also the organiser of Sofia Documental, Bulgaria’s international documentary film festival.
