Eduardo Cubillo directs the psychological thriller La Cathédrale

Filming has begun on La Cathédrale, directed by Tenerife-born filmmaker Eduardo Cubillo, who has extensive experience in documentary cinema with titles such as Un hogar sin armarios, Cubillo: Historia de un crimen de Estado and Rave Culture. The film is an ambitious psychological thriller, shot in English, and designed for worldwide theatrical release.
To underline this international scope, the feature boasts a cast led by Spanish actors Taz Skylar (seen in Boiling Point, its follow-up series, and Netflix’s adaptation of the One Piece anime) and Marta Nieto (Best Actress in the Orizzonti section at Venice for Madre, a role that also earned her a Goya nomination, and who later directed Becoming Ana), British actor Will Keen (The Man from Rome, The Wizard of the Kremlin), Belgian actor Ronald Guttman (a regular presence in American films and series such as the recent Preacher) and Spanish actor and pianist Peter Vives (The Man from Rome, the series Velvet).
According to the screenplay – written by the director and José Ortuño (Animas. The Other Side, Mamacruz, 9 Moons)– the story follows a renowned violinist attempting to rebuild his life after the murder of his teenage daughter. While he agrees to participate in a restorative justice process with the person responsible for her death, the discovery of a mysterious musical instrument among her belongings draws him into an unstoppable quest for the truth.
To mark the start of filming, which will take place over four weeks at locations in Las Palmas and Tenerife, the team held a press conference at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, one of the film’s settings. Cubillo has long been interested in restorative justice processes, noting that “apparently, two people who seem irreconcilable – harbouring hatred and countless grievances – can, through a simple conversation, whether difficult or not, end up feeling a sense of liberation that you have to see for yourself; it’s truly magical.”
The production of La Cathédrale represents a new push for ISII Group’s fiction slate heading into 2026, which includes Desde arriba, a film by Martín Cuervo starring Gonzalo de Castro, Dafne Fernández and Almudena Amor (read more); and Mi zona, directed by Cristian Beteta, winner of the latest Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film for Ángulo muerto, and starring Milena Smit, Roberto Álamo, Irene Escolar and Diego Anido.
Meanwhile, the group continues to be represented in cinemas with productions such as Love on a Tightrope, currently showing in Spain, directed by Arima León and starring Adriana Ugarte and Tania Santana; Días de agosto, by Chema de la Peña, starring Maggie Civantos and Roberto Álamo, set to premiere in Spain on 14 August; and Trinidad, a western by the duo Laura Alvea and José Ortuño, starring Gabriela Andrada, Paz Vega and Karla Sofía Gascón, scheduled to premiere in Spain in November.
