on December 26th in counter-programming to the children films Peter Pan, Elf, Brother Bear and the last episode of The Lord of the Rings was a daring but smart move for Buena Vista UK., as the film scored one of the best screen averages for the three-day weekend of December 26-28 with over $5,000. One of the front-runners for this year’s Oscars took the number 6 position at the top 20 UK box office, with a $676,721 gross from 135 screens.

still playing in 418 cinemas on its 6th week release kept its excellent third position after The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (over $12m gross in three days) and Peter Pan ($2,4m), taking another 1.7m over the weekend for a total gross of over $52.6m.
Apart from the three Indian films Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kine of Control and Munna Bhai MBBS that registered some of the best screen averages (over $3,500) over that period, Pathe’s UK documentary Touching The Void by Kevin Macdonald was the only real independent film that made its mark on the weekend’s chart. On its third week of release, Macdonald’s first theatrical project since his Oscar winning One Day In September took a $3,885 screen average from 29 screens for a total gross of $632,915.
