European cinemas enjoyed an exceptional summer in 2026, with strong audience numbers and box-office growth across a wide range of territories, according to figures highlighted by the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC). The positive results come as the exhibition sector looks ahead to the remainder of the year, with a strong film slate and renewed discussion around the importance of the theatrical experience.

According to Gower Street Analytics, global box office reached a record $4.645 billion (approximately €4.024 billion) in August 2026, making it the highest-grossing August on record and the strongest monthly result of the decade so far. The performance was particularly pronounced across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), where box office increased by 88% year on year, marking the eighth consecutive month of double-digit growth.

Year-to-date box office in the EMEA region was 29% ahead of 2025, while August became the region's highest-grossing month since 2019. The figures point to continued momentum for European cinemas following a period in which the sector has been recovering from the disruption to film supply caused by the Hollywood strikes and the wider post-pandemic adjustment.

Several major European markets recorded particularly strong results. France registered 19.9 million admissions in August, its best August since monthly records began in 1980 and twice the level recorded during the same month in 2025. Italy also enjoyed an unprecedented summer, with cinemas recording 20.8 million admissions and €162.3 million in box-office receipts between June and August, culminating in the strongest August ever recorded by Cinetel.

Germany's box office increased by 53% year on year, while Finland recorded 41% growth. Gower Street also reported substantial increases in Spain (+71%), the Netherlands (+77%), and the UK and Ireland (+80%), underlining the breadth of the recovery across European territories.

The performance was supported by a diverse film slate combining international blockbusters with successful local productions. Among the international titles highlighted by UNIC were Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, while domestic cinema also played an important role in attracting audiences. The French two-part epic drama De Gaulle, the German comedy Steckerlfischfiasko and the fourth instalment in the Spanish family franchise Tad and the Magic Lamp were cited among the local successes contributing to the strong summer performance.

The positive results also provide a strong foundation for the final months of 2026, with a number of major releases still to come. Upcoming titles highlighted by UNIC include Digger, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, offering cinemas a further opportunity to maintain audience momentum through the autumn and winter.

Laura Houlgatte, CEO of UNIC, commented: “This summer has provided a powerful demonstration of public enthusiasm for the big screen and the theatrical experience. Audiences across Europe turned out in huge numbers for major releases, once again showing the extraordinary ability of cinemas to bring people together around films that become cultural events. The sector has every reason to look ahead with confidence. With an exciting slate still to come in 2026 and beyond, our collective priority must be to build on this momentum – ensuring a strong and diverse supply of films, continuing to invest in the cinema experience and giving audiences compelling reasons to return to the big screen again and again.”
