Spanish director Pedro B Abreu is currently shooting Olguța and Her Millionaire Grandpa (Olguța și un bunic de milioane), an adventure feature based on the first book in Romanian author Alex Moldovan’s popular Olguța series. The film entered production on 23 August, with principal photography still taking place in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca until 21 September.

The story centres on 12-year-old Olguța, an intelligent and rebellious girl from a broken family, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she spends a weekend with a previously unknown aunt and meets her very wealthy grandfather for the first time. Together with her bull terrier, Farid, and her new friend Victor, Olguța embarks on a series of adventures that put her intelligence and courage to the test. Her grandfather subjects her to a series of challenges to make sure that she is someone he can entrust his fortune to.

Twelve-year-old newcomer Giulia Bîscoveanu plays Olguța. This is her first leading film role, having been selected through a national casting process. She is joined by Victoria Raileanu (Y), Adrian Nartea, Dana Rogoz (Back and Forth), Șerban Pavlu (Kontinental '25), Costel Bojog (Moartea in vacanta), Silviu Mircescu (Mentorii), Marius Damian (Scarred Hearts) and Adina Andrei (First of All, Felicia).

Abreu directs from a screenplay by Moldovan and Mihai Radu. Speaking about the adaptation, Moldovan said: “I still can’t believe that characters I wrote more than ten years ago are coming to life on screen.” The project marks his first screenwriting credit. Abreu previously directed the feature Blue Rai, which received the Audience Award in the Zonazine section of the Málaga Film Festival. He also served as showrunner and director of the TV series L’Última Nit del Karaoke.

The director is joined by Spanish cinematographer Mario Montero, with the Romanian crew including sound designer Dragoș Stanomir, art director Elena Cârlan, set decorator Bogdan Nicolescu, and costume designers Ioana Mihăilescu, Constantin Popoiu and Alina Duță.

Olguța and Her Millionaire Grandpa is being produced by Alex Teodorescu, Vlad Semenescu, Cristian Anastasiu and Alex Coteț for Romanian companies T.R.I.B.E. Films and Saga Film, with the support of a group of media and commercial partners. T.R.I.B.E. Films also holds the distribution and international sales rights, and the company is set to release the film theatrically in Romania in the first half of 2027.
