24/09/2026 - Ngo The Chau returns to direct Christoph Maria Herbst and Yuna Bennett in the sequel to the 2024 German box-office hit, with Désirée Nosbusch joining the cast

The sequel to The Door-to-Door Bookstore, one of Germany’s most popular domestic films of 2024, attracting more than 700,000 cinema admissions, has entered production. This follow-up, titled Der Buchspazierer und die Liebe (lit. The Book Walker and Love) and once again directed by Ngo The Chau, has started shooting in Hamburg, with further filming scheduled to take place in North Rhine-Westphalia and South Tyrol, Italy, through November.

The sequel once again follows Carl Kollhoff, known as the “book walker”, as he delivers books to his customers on foot. This time, however, Carl is facing a more personal challenge, the golden wedding anniversary he would have celebrated with his late wife Christiane. To feel closer to her, he travels alone to Italy to revisit the places where their love began but returns home earlier than planned when he finds it too difficult to let go of the past.

Back in Germany, Carl becomes entangled in the plans of the now 14-year-old Schascha, with whom he has developed a close friendship through their shared love of books and literature. When Schascha’s eccentric grandmother Maria is supposed to look after her while her father Malte is away for work, complications arise. Maria is preoccupied with an important research project that cannot be postponed and decides that Schascha should accompany her to Sweden. Determined to prevent this from happening while also helping Carl move on, Schascha comes up with an unusual solution: Carl and Maria need to fall in love.

German actor and comedian Christoph Maria Herbst (Extrawurst, Almost Brothers) reprises his role as Carl Kollhoff, alongside Yuna Bennett as Schascha. Ronald Zehrfeld (Two to One) as Schascha’s father, Tristan Seith as Herkules, and Maren Kroymann (Free Fall) as Mrs. Langstrumpf also return, while Désirée Nosbusch (15 Years, Sisi) joins the franchise as Maria. The new cast additionally includes Sebastian Bezzel (Beckenrand Sheriff) as Mr. Glanz and newcomer Francesco Wenz as Frithjof.

Chau is directing from a screenplay by novelist Carsten Henn, author of the original Der Buchspazierer books, and Andi Rogenhagen, who also wrote the first film. The story is based on Henn’s novel of the same title, which is due to be published in spring 2027. As in the first film, Chau also serves as cinematographer.

Der Buchspazierer und die Liebe is produced by Levin Hübner for Wüste Film West with Björn Vosgerau and Daniel Perdelwitz for Wüste Film (Hamburg), in co-production with Studiocanal and ARD Degeto Film. Sandrine Mattes, Lutz Rippe and Hooman Afshari serve as co-producers for Studiocanal, with Claudia Grässel and Sebastian Lückel representing ARD Degeto Film. The production is supported by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, IDM Südtirol, the FFA and the DFFF. Studiocanal will release the film in German cinemas on 7 October 2027.
