Vojko Anzeljc is shooting Mary’s Resurrection
- The Slovenian filmmaker's bittersweet comedy stars Katarina Čas and Klemen Slakonja as two former lovers who meet again when one of them is dead
Slovenian filmmaker Vojko Anzeljc is currently shooting his new feature, Mary’s Resurrection (Marijino vstajenje), a bittersweet comedy about love, longing and the difficulty of letting go.
The story follows Matjaž, an employee at a funeral company whose job has one obvious advantage: his clients rarely complain. This changes when a coffin arrives at the crematorium, containing his greatest, never-forgotten love, Marija. After years of silence, the moment has finally arrived for Matjaž and Marija to talk openly. Which would be considerably easier if Marija wasn’t dead.
The film stars the internationally known Slovenian actress Katarina Čas (Wild Cherry, Paradise, The Guard) as Marija and the actor, comedian, singer, television host and musician Klemen Slakonja (Personal Baggage, Beanie) as Matjaž. The supporting cast includes Primož Pirnat (Shooting Blanks), Mojca Funkl (Sanremo), Gaja Filač, Primož Vrhovec (The Basics of Killing), Anže Zevnik and Marinka Štern (Good Night, Missy).
According to its authors, Mary’s Resurrection is not a story about religion, but about faith in love. The film explores a love that should have been cremated and forgotten long ago, as well as the kind of endless longing that can turn into an illness, and feelings that could make your head spin.
On the first day of shooting, Čas stated, “Marija is quite different from me and experiences quite a few complications and twists along her journey, which gives me a lot of room for creativity while also presenting an interesting challenge. She and Matjaž go through numerous unusual and unpredictable adventures, so we certainly won’t be bored.”
Anzeljc directs from his own screenplay, with Simon Pintar as director of photography, Aleksandar Stanojević as editor, Matjaž Pavlovec as production designer, Katarina Šavs as costume designer, Tinka Prpar as make-up artist and Tomaž Okroglič Rous as composer. Filming will continue, mostly in Ljubljana, until the end of October. Anzeljc’s debut, The Last Supper, was presented at the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival in New York in 2002, where it was one of the four European films selected in the feature competition. His other credits include the feature-length documentary The Sphinx and the television series In the Name of the People.
Mary’s Resurrection is produced by Sašo Kolarič for Mangart Production Group, in co-production with public broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija and Warehouse Collective. The film is financially supported by the Slovenian Film Centre, with additional assistance and services provided by Viba Film Ljubljana.
