Netflix has announced the start of shooting in Madrid on Rata, a remake of the French box-office hit Penny Pincher!, directed and co-written (together with Nicolas Cuche and Laurent Turner) by Fred Cavayé and starring popular French actor Dany Boon.

Its Spanish version is toplined by another widely known filmmaker and actor, Paco León (known for Carmina or Blow Up and Carmina y amén, who this year directed and starred in Aída: The Movie, one of Spain’s major box-office hits), alongside Miren Ibarguren (who also recently appeared in the same film, and in series such as Billionaires' Bunker and The Nameless) and Alícia Falcó (the series The Map of Longing and That Night). They are directed by Oriol Pérez Alcaraz (one of the helmers of the series La casa nostra), while Andreu Ortoll (the series A 100-Million Reward and La canción) serves as director of photography.

Penned by Eric Navarro (the series Cites and You Shall Not Lie) and Natalia Durán (the series Love You to Death and Tell Me What You Want), the movie recounts how Federico (played by Paco León) counts the minutes spent in the shower, the watts of electricity used and even the sighs he utters. His perfectly controlled life as an inveterate penny-pincher is blown apart when Laura (played by Alícia Falcó), the daughter he didn’t know he had, turns up on his doorstep. Determined to wreck his meticulously calibrated savings system and to pair him off with Valentina (Miren Ibarguren), the young woman will prove to him that some things are priceless.

One of its producers, Adrià Monés, of Fasten Films, tells Cineuropa, “We have adapted the script to Spain and to our times, as a decade has passed since the original movie. In addition, we have introduced several changes to improve the story and elevate it. And the leads, Paco León and Miren Ibarguren, ooze chemistry and have a great rapport, especially in comedy, as they have demonstrated on several occasions.”

In 2026, Fasten Films had a strong presence at the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered three features: The End of It, the debut by María Martínez Bayona, starring Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace, Gael García Bernal and David Verdaguer, which also screened at Sitges; Morocco’s Oscar submission, Strawberries by Laïla Marrakchi; and the UK’s Oscar submission, the non-fiction film Rehearsals for a Revolution by Pegah Ahangarani, which won the L'Oeil d'Or for Best Documentary. The company is currently developing and producing new projects by Mar Coll, Marcel Barrena, Jorge Dorado (see the news), Ana Katz, Carlos Marques-Marcet and Nely Reguera, among others.

Rata is a production by Adrià Monés for Fasten Films and Gaël Nouaille for France's Borsalino Productions, with executive production by Claudia Calviño, for Netflix.
