Eastern European cinema at Trieste
Emir Kusturica’s Life Is a Miracle shown at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and set in Bosnia in the 90ies, will be the opening film at the Trieste Film Festival – Alpe Adria Cinema. The 16th edition which always attracts films from Central and Eastern Europe, will take place from 20 to 27 January in the Excelsior Cinema and at the Miela di Trieste Theatre.
Among the ten films in competition: Másnap: after the day before (The Day After) by Hungarian director Attila Janisch, the directorial debut of Nimrod Antal Kontroll (Control) which will be released in Italian cinemas after its competition screening at the festival. Child trade from Eastern Europe to Germany will be at the heart of Kral Zlodeju (King of Thieves) by Ivan Fila, a co-production between the Czech Repuclic, Germany, Austria and France. The first feature films will include Mila from Mars by Sophia Zornitsa, Muxmäuschentill (Silent As The Grave) by German Marcus Mittermeier, and Predmestje (Provincia) by SlovakianVinko Moderndorfer. There will also be a lot of expectation for the competition film San zimske noci (Midwinter Night’s Dream) directed by Goran Paskaljevic whose previous credit includes the successful Someone Else’s America.
The festival will also include a retrospective dedicated to Jurai Jakubisko, the Slovakian director who taught Emir Kusturica at the FAMU and was a friend to Giuletta Masina.
The screening of Werner Herzog’s documentary The white diamond, Italian director Stefano Pasetto’s documentary I Sentieri della Gloria(Paths of Glory about the life of Mario Monicelli, as well as the film Tartarughe sul dorso Tortoise On The Back with Slovakian actress Barbora Bobulova.
