A new generation of Italian directors

Italy's presence at the Rotterdam Film Festival this year is particularly noticeable: young Italian directors as well as famous masters like Gianni Amelio —not to mention the many coproductions— are competing, and this not only in the official selection but also in the brand new sections created for the Dutch festival. BR> Directors running for a Tiger Award are, Daniele Gaglianone for Nemmeno il destino, produced and distributed by the dynamic company Fandango, and a beginner, Francesco Fei, for Onde (Waters) (Apnea Film).

"Cinema of the Future: Sturm und Drang" is a new section open to independant films. This year, 50 works from all over the world will be presented, amongst which Le conseguenze del amore (The Consequences of Love) by one of the most promising Italians directors at the moment, Paolo Sorrentino, and La nina santa (The Holy Child) by Lucretia Martel, a film co-produced by Argentina, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands (La Pasionaria, R&C Produzioni, Teodora Film, El Deseo, Fondazione, Montecinemaverita, Hubert Bals Fund, Lita Stantic Producciones).
In the "Cinema of the World" section, we find Private by Saverio Costanzo (Istituto Luce and OffSide) – Golden Pardo 2004 at the Locarno International Film Festival. In that same category, we also find the winner of the Silver Spiga at the Valladolid Film Festival, Vento di terra directed by another shooting star, Vincenzo Marra, as well as a coproduction: El Abrazo Partido by Daniele Burman (Istituto Luce - Italia).

"Maestros: Kings & Aces", designed for the more famous directors, includes Gianni Amelio 's Le chiavi di casa (Achab Film) and Tonino De Bernardi's Marlene De Sousa.
As for Daniele Ciprì and Franco Maresco, they are competing in "Cinema Regained" with a documentary, Come inguaiammo il cinema italiano. So does the famous cinema couple Gianikian - Ricci Lucchi with Oh, uomo.
In the "Short Film" category, a special sub-section was created: "Four Times Italy" . This year's program includes Il cammino (The Way) by Edoardo Winspeare, Il sopranista by Mauro John Capece, Fare bene Mikles by Christian Angeli, and Tecnacria by Alessandro Gagliardo and Giuseppe Spina.
Other Italian coproductions are also worth mentioning: Besides by Kathrin Bohr, Aral by Carlos Casas, the prize-winning documentary at the Torino Film Festival Saodat Ismailova, and Uomoduomo by Anri Sala (selected as "Artist in Focus").
