BERLINALE 2005 Italy

Medusa's great expectations for a young director

by

The only Italian film in competition this year in Berlin is the first film of a young director previously specialised in documentary films, Stefano Mordini. It is on this film, entitled Provincia meccanica that Medusa Film will be counting this year, but the company relies on the great popularity of its main actor, Stefano Accorsi. His partner in the film is the young actress Valentina Cervi. The film's distribution starts with nearly 200 copies this Friday, that is, the very day of its screening in Berlin. "This is the best news I have ever heard, says Mordini, I thank the selection committee very much."

The film, entirely shot in Ravenna, cost 2.500.000 euros to Medusa Film, but the television rights have already been bought by Sky TV. Executive producers are Minnie Ferrara & Associati, with the collaboration of KameraFilm. "I have been working with Stefano Mordini for many years," Minnie Ferrara points out. "Stefano put of lot of himself in this film which is the result of a long process involving much effort."
The setting chosen by Mordini reminds Michelangelo Antonioni's Deserto rosso. Thus, the plot, the distress of a couple at the end of their love story, occurs in a material landscape, a land of reality. The director explains: "I have always worked on documentaries, and documentaries imply a thorough observation of reality. That is also how I wrote this film, observing all."
