January: good results in the box-office
In January 2005, French productions have had the upper hand against American feature films in the box-office. The results published by the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC ), reveal that no less than 15,55 million tickets were sold last month (that is, 3,2% more than in January 2004), and that 45,7% of them were for French films, while the Americans represented 42,5% of the market. The figures are perfectly consistent with the 'rivalry' which has been going on this year: in the past 12 months, French films sold 40,3% of the tickets, and American ones 45,9%.
Some films have particularly contributed to last month's excellent results for national productions: Le dernier trappeur by Nicolas Vanier (1,9 million tickets in 7 weeks), Les sœurs fâchées (1,3 M in 6 weeks) by Alexandra Leclerc, L’un reste, l’autre part by Claude Berri (700 000 tickets in 3 weeks), but also Rois et reine by Arnaud Desplechin (400 000 tickets in art cinema theatres) and La marche de l’Empereur by Luc Jacquet (450 000 tickets sold on the very first week).
