FESTIVALS Belgium

Anima 2005, animation cinema in good shape

by

For eleven days, the 24th edition of the Anima Festival in Brussels presented a selection of flourishing, questioning and multicultural films. With 13 features films in competition, the venues were crowded for the whole week and the festival reflected the development of a film genre in which Europe begins to play an important role. The audience made no mistake by awarding Thierry Schiel's Renart, le renard the Grand Prix Anima 2005 for feature film.

In charge of appraising short films competing in the category "C'est du Belge", the members of the official jury (Carine Ermans , Viviane Vanfleteren, Serge Bromberg, Paul Driessen and Benoît Feroumont) awarded the Grand Prix from the Brussels-Capital region government (3000€) to Thijs De Cloedt's Voer voor Kranken. To pay tribute to the winner, the jury joyfully struck up a poem on Father Ubu. Voer voor Kranken is a film full of disrespectful and joyful provocations. Psychoanalysis and its treatment methods are re-invented in a clinic following a seminal discovery: the centre of the human soul is located in the anus. This is a film full of ideas, jokes and freedom ending with an acid quote: "crazy people will be well looked after!"

Partner of the festival (be TV, RTBF, Canvas), Cinergie jury decided to select Marie-Laure Guisset's Home Sweet Gnome, a film about a gnome living in a mushroom who wakes up and realises that his house has been picked up and transferred in the icy universe of a fridge. In slightly more than two minutes, the talented and creative film, creates an original and poetic atmosphere. In fridge world, dead objects seem spooky, but the gnome will soon find some warm comfort in a little igloo on the bottom of the fridge. Cinergie will offer the young filmmaker an electronic press kit, to be soon published on Cinergie website. The press kit will include both a filmed and a written interview, a presentation of the director, the film drawings as well as the film itself.
