Multiplexes and digital cinema theatres keep spreading. The yearly statistics published by MEDIA Salles, that is, the European Cinema Yearbook 2004 final edition, presented in Berlin, emphasizes the growth of these two sectors.
In 2004, 944 new sites providing eight or more screens have been created (6,7% more than in 2003) while no less than 233 theatres chose new digital technology for a total of 291 screens. A key moment at the MEDIA Salles official presentation was when Joachim Ph. Wolff chose to end his vice-presidency in MEDIA Salles by delivering a speech on illegal downloading and its consequences, as well as those of DVD and homevideo, on admissions.

A report requested by the French Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC) pointed out the fact that the DVD market mainly attracts consumers who only occasionally went to to cinema before, if ever.
The growth of DVD caused 28% of the occasional spectators to turn away from cinema theatres, and it had an impact on 32 % of the people who never got near a screen, but according to the report, the threatening ‘DVD effect’ did not in fact significantly change the habits of frequent cinema-goers. Admissions actually raised by 7%.
These results greatly help estimate future developments, and they underline the potential of multiplexes and of the new technologies. In any case, said Wolff, ‘without films, there is no cinema, and neither is there homecinema.
