BERLINALE 2005 Film Market

Vinterberg comes back with Wendy

by

Dick, a young pacifist, and Wendy, have in common something sordid: the gun he found by mistake. Fascinating Dear Wendy is Thomas Vinterberg’s fourth film. It is already hotly-debated in Denmark, where it was released on the 4th of February.
Present in Berlin, not in competition but in the market, Dear Wendy received good acclaim amongst the professionals, and was bought by the British company Metrodome and the German Legend.
This film, written by Lars Von Trier, takes place in the miserable industrial city of Estherslope, located in an imaginary America both directors have already shown in the past (Vinterberg in It’s all about love [+see also:

which will very soon be followed by Manderlay).

’I wanted to talk about the loneliness of a man. I did it by blurring all certainties and creating some depth so as to make this man totally real. My film aims at the American market, and that is a real dare,’ says Vinterberg.
This film, which benefitted from the common efforts of Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, was produced by Lucky Punch I/S (fusion of Nimbus and Zentropa), and is supported by Filmstiftung North-Rhine-Westphalia, ZDF, Canal Plus and ARTE, Filminstitute, TV2 Danmark, Nordic Film and TV Fund. Its good distribution is ensured by the MEDIA Plus Programme of the European Commission.
