CANNES 2005 Jury

Payne presides Un Certain Regard

by

Yesterday, the organisers of the Cannes Film Festival announced that, after the producer Jeremy Thomas, this year’s president of the jury for Un Certain Regard will be the American director Alexander Payne. The young director born in 1961 in Omaha (Nebraska) has already made four feature films, starting with Citizen Ruth in 1996, followed by Election in 1999. His 2002 movie, About Schmidt, starring Jack Nicholson, was selected to compete in Cannes, and his latest film, Sideways, currently on the screen, has already won a Bafta, and the Golden Globe for the Best Script. More awards may follow on Sunday night, since the film has been nominated at the Oscars in five categories (Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting role, and Best Adaptation).

But for the next Festival de Cannes (11-22 mai), the candidate becomes head of a jury, thus joining Emir Kusturica (Competition) and Abbas Kiarostami (Caméra d'Or). This year’s big events in Cannes are expected to be the third episode of Starwars: The Revenge of the Siths.
