AWARDS Poland

The Orly Awards

by

On Sunday night in Warsaw, the 7th ceremony of the yearly Polish cinema awards will reveal this year’s Orly winners. Three favourites are predominant in this year’s list of nominees in the 14 categories : Mój Nikifor by Krzysztof Krauze and Wesele by Wojciech Smarzowski got 10 nominations each, just before Magdalena Piekorz’s first feature, Pregi, which was nominated in 9 categories and already granted a prize from the Polish press. There are other movies which should not be overlooked : Ubu Król by Piotr Szulkin (4 nominations), Vinci by Juliusz Machulski running in three categories, notably for Best Film and Best Director, and Symetria by Konrad Niewolski (3 nominations). This year’s Orlys will allow other countries to discover a cinema which is quite weak, productionwise —only 13 features met the conditions required to apply for an Orly (ie. having been on the national screens for at least a week in 2004) as opposed to 18 last year.
It is also worth mentioning that, for the first time, the Polish Cinema Academy will give an Orly to the Best European Film of the year. Amongst the nominees, we find Girl with a Pearl Earring [+see also:

by Peter Webber (UK), The Return by Andrey Zvyagintsev (Russia), and The Bad Education [+see also:
