Wesele, best film of the year
- Victory of Wojciech Smarzowski for his feature film last night in Warsaw in 7th edition of the Orly Awards
Yesterday night, in Warsaw, for the 7th edition of the Orly Awards (Eagle), the yearly Polish cinema event, Wojciech Smarzowski won a landslide victory with his feature Wesele (The Wedding). The film was granted no less than six awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Script, and Best Actor (Marian Dziedziel). After Locarno, the happy director, born in 1963, is now ackowledged as one of the most talented of a new generation in Polish cinema. Wesele, a Grupa Filmowa production with the partnership of Telewizja Polska, Filmi It, and Agencja Produkcji Filmowej, depicts a traditional wedding which turns hellish. The very materialistic father of the bride tries to impress the guests with fabulous music, food, and presents (a car and a honeymoon in Croatia) but a series of unexpected events disrupt his careful plan.
The other big challenger (10 nominations) Mój Nikifor by Krzysztof Krauze, got five awards but most of them are technical (picture, scenery, editing, sound), and only one is artistic (Best Actress, Krystyna Feldman). The critics’ favourite, Pregi by Magdalena Piekorz ends up with only one Orly (Jan Frycz as Best Actor in a Supporting Role) despite its 9 nominations. As for the newly created Orly for the Best European Film , it went to the British production Girl with a Pearl Earring [+see also:
