Norwegian wins at Tampere

Through My Think Glasses (Gjennom mine tykke briller) by Norwegian Pjotr Sagepin has just won the prestigious Grand prix at the 35th Tampere International Short Film Festival (9-1 March). The jury which selected it among 35 other short films from 78 countries, described the Norwegian clay animation as “skillful and imaginative, a work of art and humanity” and that it “portrays the human nature in apeotic and loving way”.
Another winner in the international competition section was the Irish short film Undressing My Mother by Ken Wardrop which won the Best documentary award and the UIP Tampere award.

In the Finnish competition, the main prize in the ‘films under 30 minutes’ category went to the experimental Optical SoundThe Three Rooms of Melancholia (Melancholian 3 Huonetta) by Pirjo Honkasalo won in the ‘films longer than 30 minutes category’. In the short film entry, a Special Prize was given to The Birthday (Syntymäpäivä) by Kari Juusonen and a Special mention to Perkele by Arto Tuohimaa.
The Jameson Short Film Award given at Tampere for the fifth time was awarded to Nightshift (Yövuoro) by Simo Koivunen, Samppa Kukkonen and Sara Wahl.

The total number of visitors at the festival rose to 30,000 this year and 200 out of a total 800 guests came from abroad. As usual, selected highlights from Tampere Film Festival will screen on March 19 at the Kiasma Thetre in Helsinki, and next year’s event will be held between 8-12 March 2006.
